i'm definitely going to get this printed out and framed . . .
after so many of you commented on this particular photo, i had a bit of fun with it on picnik, and this is what i came up with. i'm going to hang it in our home somewhere - i'll let you know where it ends up.

this one is called
only thing is, the only drink I ever imbibe in is coffee, coffee, and more coffee and the occassional energy drink (hello night shift!). but sadly, when i was sewing on this, I had nothing to sip on. the coffee maker was refusing to brew and no energy drinks in the fridge . . .
at first, I had no idea how to even make my brain work this way.
but then I just started . . . and oh. I like this!
yeah, I could get into this.
so - another successful installment in the quilting bee!
now I'm looking forward to May!
The string quilt block was for February.
These log cabin blocks are for March.
I've never sewn a real log cabin block before either. The kind where you measure all the pieces and sew light fabrics on one side, darks on the other. Kim sent 3 fabrics, but asked if we would use a bit from our own stashes for the middle block. I used a plaid that has appeared in many of my sewing projects over the past few years (it used to be a shirt of Ben's). And I made two blocks, so I could sew with all the fabric she sent.
and here is my first block - a string block for Danielle - the organizer of our bee.
She had us paper-piece this one - something I've never done before. I don't know that it was my favorite way to sew, but I do love the way the block turned out, and I still love string quilts! It will be so fun to see this come together for her!
Danielle blogs at Drawsting Studio and runs a fabric shop, online and in a store front. I'm so glad she organized this bee. I am trying to figure out what the pattern will be for my quilt . . . though I do have until fall - November is my month. We shall see! If you have any links to quilts that you just love, will you leave them for me in the comments? I'm totally open to suggestions!
For two years (2005 + 2006) Ben and I hosted a college-age Bible study group in our living room. We became such good friends with all our "crazy people" (as 3-year-old Maddie called them). Ben and I aren't match-makers, but our living room meetings have so far fostered 6 weddings!
And now, the babies start coming. :) The first two who got married had their first baby, a little girl, in January. And this quilt is going to be very happy with her.
Once again, I used fabrics I found on clearance and at thrift shops and repurposed some clothes, and then, then there are those fish and those orange flowers. Those came from my friend G. And what fun to piece those orange fish swimming in all the blue.
{What I did:: I made nine sort-of log cabin blocks. Then I bordered them with white before sewing them together. I quilted it on my machine, first with random wavy orange lines, then with random wavy white lines. I just used a regular sewing foot and allowed the fabric to push and wave a bit - like waves. I am really pleased with how this turned out!}
