Here it is! Are you excited? I am! Now all of you who love this top can make it for the little ladies in your life! (and I am still working on the adult-sized variation. I will post that when I get it done.)
Like all the tutorials out there, this one belongs to its creator - me, but I am gladly sharing it with you. You may make these tops as gifts, but you may not sell Maddie Tops made with this pattern or as close variations of this pattern.
O.K. Here goes!
The Maddie Top
1. Find some fun fabric. A pillow case or flat sheet with a fun hem-line works great! But you can also use any piece of your favorite fabric. You will need matching thread and a small piece of 1/2 inch (1 1/2 cm) elastic - 10 inches (25.5 cm) long.
2. Make your pattern pieces.
This is the front piece ::
Cut one full length front piece, and one that is just the top - about 7 inches (17.5 cm) long. (If the fabric you are using does not have a finished hem, add an inch or two, so you can hem your top.)
For
the back cut a rectangle that is 16 inches by 20 inches (40 cm by 50
cm). The 16 inch side is the height, the 20 inch side is the width.
Cut two rectangles 14 inches by 5 inches (35 cm by 13 cm) for the shoulder straps.
3.
Make your shoulder straps. Fold the fabric in half the long way, right
sides together. Sew the long side together. Turn right side out. Put
a little fold or gather in each end of each strap.
4. Hem the bottom of your short front piece.
5.
Lay your full size front piece out, right side up. Position the
shoulder straps, front side facing the right side of your shirt piece.
Lay the short top piece on top of all of this, wrong side facing up at
you. Pin this all together.
6. Sew these together, the top edge - from armpit to armpit, not down the sides.
7. Turn right side out! And iron smooth. (I ended up moving the straps a bit closer together - so they were both coming straight off the top.)
8. Lay your back piece out, wrong side facing up at you. Turn over a 1.4 inch at the top. Iron.
9.
Now lay out your front piece. Lay out your back piece, lining up the
bottom edges. Turn over enough of the back piece to make it match up
with the straight edge of the top piece. Iron.
10. Sew along
the bottom edge of what you turned over. Then sew through the middle
of what you turned over. (You are making the elastic casing and a
ruffle.)
11. Thread the elastic through the bottom channel and sew it in place at both ends.
12. Now, pin the sides of the shirt right sides together, lining up the bottom edge, and using LOTS of pins.
13.
Stitch the sides together. If you have a serger, now is the time to
use it! If you don't, straight stitch both sides, then switch to a
zigzag and stitch the edges of the fabric. This will greatly
strengthen your seams.
14. If you have an unfinished hem-line, now is the time to hem it!
15. Hand stitch the loose ends of the straps into the back of the top. You can place them almost overlapping, like I did here, or farther apart - however you like.
16. Dress up your little princess!
